Xplorer Review

Xplorer Review

I had the wonderful opportunity to see the Xplorer from La Sportiva before it came out while I was at  Outdoor Retailer. At that time I was very impressed by the shoe and excited for it’s release, and my first chance to try the shoe out came during a 3 day canyoning course with Zion Mountain School.

I love my little snow peak lantern, simplicity in design and function make it one of my all time favorites in form and function. The Mini Hozuki Lantern is small but powerful with a slew of capabilities makes this a must for any camp or backpack set up. Even just as a back up in a day pack, it has the the ability to clip onto your gear via the magnet clasp system. This little LED lantern produces 60 lumens allowing for 40-70 hrs of run time and weighing in at 3.1 oz. It’s pretty waterproof in some light rain and the silicone rubber lantern shade can be removed for cleaning purposes.

As usual, Edelrid is coming out with some great new stuff for 2014. From new colors to new additions. The simplicity allows for form and function to really join together in something that is usually sacrificed for one over the other.

Whether you climb inside or out, the type of holds you encounter can play a pivotal part in your climbing experience. But as gym rats know, when you’re only climbing on artificial holds, things can get a bit redundant. Creating something new and unique is what causes certain designers, climbers, and companies to stand out in this market place.

I like to find the companies at Outdoor Retailer that are solid overseas but seem to be just a like start-up in North America. Tendon is one of those companies, and a company I have been hearing more and more about. In wondering what this company was all about, I decided to stop by at Outdoor Retailer and chat with Jiri. Tendon is a Czech based company making a wide range of ropes, harnesses, carabiners, cords, slings, and more. Alpine, Canyoning, Sport, Military and Rescue just to name a few areas of operation for these ropes.

I would have to say my favorite thing to do at Outdoor Retailer is to stop by the Krieg booth and say hi to Sam. It is always such a delight to stop by to see all the new patterns and talk with him, such a great attitude and energy. Running his sewing machine, his booth gets flooded with people who must feel the same as I do cause he is one busy guy.

Stopping by the Madrock booth this year was as friendly and fun as it has been in the past years. The first thing that caught my eye was they new floating shoe, which turned out to be Madrock’s new high performance shoe, the M5.

We’ve been talking with Scarpa the past few years and every opportunity we’ve had to discuss the shoes design with Heinz Mariacher has always been a pleasure. Being a designer, I love the micro and macros that go into concepts, design, function and more of a new shoe.

We here at belaycafe are sooooo excited for the deep water soloing comp at the winter sports park. Pushing 50 feet with a 26 foot roof. they have been jumping into this pool for years on ski’s, now it’s time to drop in off a massive wall. Here’s to hoping they leave it up permanently and open it to the public like the jumps have been for years. Thanks Momentum Climbing Gym for the great videos.

For those who understand, respect and practice canyoning you know what risk and rewards it has to offer. It is a thinking man activity which requires problem solving, way finding, physics and other skills that if not applied right can lead to injury or death. This documentary is amazing in showing how, why and where people have begun to master the art of exploring canyons that have yet to be seen by anyone.
